Scatole dei ricordi - Keepsakes boxes

Io amo conservare dei ricordi di ogni viaggio che faccio. Non parlo dei souvenir che si acquistano nei negozi, ma delle piccole cose: biglietti dell'autobus, carte d'imbarco, biglietti d'ingresso dei musei, biglietti da visita e così via. 
(EN) I love treasuring keepsakes from every travel. I don't mean souvenirs that one buys in shops, but the little things: bus tickets, boarding passes, museum tickets, business cards and so on. 

Finora li avevo sempre tenuti dentro a due scatole da scarpe (una dedicata esclusivamente ai ricordi del viaggio di nozze in Australia!) che sostavano in bella vista sulla nostra libreria, ovvero la prima cosa che si vede entrando in casa nostra: 
Till now I stored them into two shoes boxes (one only for the keepsakes from our honeymoon in Australia!) that stood on one shelf of our bookcase, the first thing visible when entering our house: 

Non molto belle da vedere... così nei giorni scorsi avevo pensato di comprare qualche scatola colorata per sostituire le scatole da scarpe. Ma poi ho pensato: perchè devo comprare delle scatole quando ce le ho già? Basta cambiare colore! Così armata di colori acrilici mi sono messa all'opera. 
Not very nice to see... so in the last days I thought of buying some coloured boxes to replace the shoes boxes. Then I thought: why should I buy new boxes if I already have some? I just need to change colour! Then I took some acrylic paint and started with the modification. 

Occorrente: 
scatole da scarpe in buono stato
colori acrilici (io ho usato bianco e verde mescolati perchè non sono riuscita a trovare la tonalità di verde che volevo...) 
pennello 
due contenitori, uno per l'acqua e uno per diluire ed eventualmente mescolare i colori (i fondi di due bottigliette di plastica andanno più che bene) 
carta da giornale per coprire il tavolo
Materials: 
shoes boxes in good condition
acrylic paint (I mixed white and green because I couldn't find the green shade I wanted...)
paint brush
two plastic containers, one for water and one to mix and dilute the paint (bottom parts of two plastic bottles would do)
newspapers to cover the table

Suggerimento: se le vostre scatole non sono in tinta unita, provate prima il colore sulla parte decorata, a volte il colore acrilico non aderisce bene sulla vernice usata per i disegni. Inoltre se ci sono etichette incollate, cercate di rimuoverle meglio che potete, altrimenti i bordi delle etichette potrebbero arricciarsi con l'umidità del colore acrilico. Io ho dimenticato di fare entrambe le cose..... 
Suggestion: if your boxes are not monochromatic, try first the paint on part of the decoration, sometimes the acrylic paint doesn't adhere on the varnish used for the decorations. Moreover, if there are glued labels remove them as best as you can, otherwise the label borders could crease with the paint mist. I forgot to do both things.....

Iniziate con il creare il colore preferito: nel mio caso ho mescolato verde e bianco fino ad ottenere la nuance giusta. Tenete conto che il colore acrilico una volta asciutto sarà leggermente più scuro. Aggiungete acqua per rendere il colore facilmente stendibile (i miei erano molto pastosi) ma attenzione a non diluire troppo altrimenti il colore non sarà più coprente! Assicuratevi di miscelare colore sufficiente a coprire tutta la scatola e il coperchio: potrebbe essere difficile ricreare lo stesso identico colore in un secondo momento
Start by creating your favourite colour: I mixed white and green to reach the right shade. Keep in mind that the acrylic paint will be slightly darker once dried. Add water to make the paint easily spreadable (mine were thick) but don't dilute too much or the paint won't be covering enough! Mind to mix paint enough to cover the whole box and lid: it could be hard to recreate the same nuance afterwords

Date una prima mano di colore sulle pareti laterali della scatola. Non importa se rimarranno visibili i segni delle pennellate, con la seconda mano uniformeremo il tutto
Spread a first layer of paint on the side of the box. Don't worry if the brush strokes are visible, you will fix this with a second layer of paint

Appoggiate la scatola capovolta sopra un sostegno stabile (un paio di lattine dovrebbero andare bene) in modo da poter dipingere il fondo della scatola senza dover toccare i bordi, già dipinti
Put the box upside down on a firm support (a couple of thins would do) to paint the bottom of the box without touching the painted sides

Ripetete le stesse operazioni per il coperchio
Repeat the same for the lid

Aspettate che il colore sia ben asciutto e date una seconda mano di colore. Ed ecco fatto, due scatole come nuove!!! Ho deciso di usare due sfumature diverse dello stesso verde, sapete che mi piacciono gli accostamenti di colori in nuance!
Wait until the paint is dry and apply a second layer. And here they are: two boxes as good as new!!! I decoded to use two different shades of green, you know I love ombre colours! 

In un secondo momento ho deciso di decorare le scatole, così ho creato al computer le due scritte "Viaggi" e "Australia", le ho stampate su un normale foglio di carta e le ho ricalcate sul fianco delle scatole appoggiando il foglio alla scatola e ripassando i contorni delle scritte con una matita, premendo bene per lasciare il segno sulla scatola
Then I decided to decorate the boxes, so I created on my pc the writings "Viaggi" (="Travels") and "Australia", I printed them on common paper and I traced them on one side of each box by placing the paper on the box and tracing the writing borders with a pencil, pushing a bit to leave a mark on the box

Infine le ho dipinte con della tempera grigio scuro
Finally I painted them using dark grey paint

Ora stanno decisamente meglio, vero?!?! 
Now they look really better, don't they?!?!

Mettere in ordine - Tidying up

Finalmente mi sono decisa a mettere un po' in ordine la mia stanza del cucito! 
Finally I decided to tidy up a bit my sewing room! 

Meglio tardi che mai... 
Better late than never... 

Ho ritrovato una scatola che avevo ricevuto tempo fa quando avevo ricevuto un oggetto ordinato su internet. Utilissima per riordinare, ma questa non era molto semplice da aprire: bisognava infilare le dita nell'apertura per riuscire a sollevare il coperchio 
I found a box that I received some time ago when I ordered an item on internet. Very useful to tidy up, but this was not easy to open: I had to insert the fingers in the opening to lift the lid 

Così ho pensato di modificarla un po'
So I decided to modify it a bit 

Materiale occorrente: 
una scatola difficile da aprire 
un ritaglio di nastro (ne bastano circa 15cm)
uno stecchino di legno (purtroppo ho dimenticato di inserirlo nella foto...)
taglierino o forbici 
ago e filo 
righello e matita
Material: 
a box difficult to open 
a leftover of ribbon (15cm are enough)
a wooden tootpick (sorry, I left it out of the picture...)
cutter or scissors 
needle and thread 
ruler and pencil

Aprite il coperchio e con matita e righello segnate il centro del bordo, nella piegatura 
Open the lid and using ruler and pencil mark the centre of the edge, along the folding

Disegnate un tratto leggermente più largo del nastro e fate un taglio lungo il tratto segnato 
Draw a line slightly larger than the ribbon and but along this sign

Piegare il nastro e inserire le estremità all'interno del taglio, lasciando la parte piegata all'esterno della scatola 
Fold the ribbon and insert the ends inside the cut, leaving the folded part outside the box

Cucite insieme i due lembi del nastro 
Sew the two ends of the ribbon together

Inserite lo stecchino tra i nastri e cucite i nastri tra loro in modo da bloccarlo 
Insert the tootpick between the ribbon ends and sew them together to block the tootpick

Tagliate le estremità appuntite dello stecchino 
Cut the sharp ends of the tootpick

Chiudete la scatola, tirate la parte esterna del nastro ed ecco la vostra scatola pronta per riordinare
Close the box, pull the folded side of the ribbon and here is your box ready to tidy up 

Così semplice da aprire!!! 
So simple to open!!!

Decorazione di Natale 2013 - Christmas ornament 2013

Questo è il prima Natale che passiamo nella casetta nuova, nonchè il nostro primo Natale come famiglia! 
This is our first Christmas in the new house, and also the first one as a family! 

Ho deciso perciò di inaugurare quella che spero diventi una "tradizione": realizzare ogni anno un nuovo decoro per il nostro albero di Natale con tanto di anno scritto sopra, come ricordo. 
So I decided to start what I hope will become a "tradition": to realize every year a new ornament for the Christmas tree with the year written on it, as a memento. 

Ed ecco la decorazione del Natale 2013: una pallina di polistirolo rivestita con avanzi di tessuto del mio abito da sposa, divisa in sette spicchi. Ogni spicchio ha in cima un pezzetto dei nastri di organza utilizzati per i libretti della Messa, a formare un piccolo fiore arcobaleno. 
And here is the Christmas 2013 ornament: a polystirene ball covered with scraps of the fabric of my wedding dress, divided in seven sections. Every section has on top a piece of organdi ribbon from the booklets of the Mass to create a small rainbow flower. 

La pallina è inoltre decorata con strass termoadesivi (anche questi avanzati dal mio abito): su sei spicchi ho giocato con le dimensioni diverse, creando un decoro più largo al centro e che si restringe alle due estremità
The ball is also decorated with self-adhesive strasses (again leftovers from my wedding dress): on six sections I played with the different sizes, creating a decoration larger on the middle and shrinking on the ends

mentre su uno spicchio c'è scritto "2013" con minuscoli strass da 1mm. 
while on one section there is "2013" written in tiny 1mm strasses. 

Decisamente evocativa come decorazione, non trovate?! 
Certainly evocative, don't you think so?!

Matrimonio 5: il cuscino portafedi - Wedding 5: the rings pillow

Più semplice di così non si può! 
As simple as can be!

Ecco il nostro cuscino portafedi: due semplici quadrati ricavati dai ritagli del mio abito da sposa, cuciti insieme e imbottiti, con applicati due nastrini di raso sottilissimi (anche questi riciclati: provenivano da una vecchia bomboniera) a cui abbiamo legato le fedi. 
Here is our rings pillow: two simple squares obtained from the fabric scraps of my wedding dress, sewn together and stuffed, with two thin satin ribbons applied (those too recycled: they came from an old wedding favor) where we tied the wedding rings. 

A volte basta davvero poco per creare qualcosa di bello, non trovate? 
Sometimes you really need little to create something beautiful, don't you think so?

Trasformazione di una tenda - Curtain transformation

Finalmente, dopo "solo" due mesi nella casa nuova, anche la finestra del bagno ha una tenda! Era ora!!! 
At last, after "only" two months in the new house, the bathroom window has a fabric shade! About time!!! 

Nella mia vecchia casetta avevo due tendoni di organza nell'azzurro e grigio che mi piacevano un sacco, ma purtroppo nella casa nuova non abbiamo finestre adatte a riutilizzarle. Così ho deciso di ricavare da uno dei tendoni una bella tenda a vetro per il bagno, i colori sono proprio quelli giusti! 
In my old house I had two curtains in light blue and grey organdi that I liked a lot, but unfortunately in the new house we don't have a proper window to use them. So I decided to use one of the two curtains to sew a fabric shade for the new bathroom, the colours are exactly the right ones! 

Per prima cosa ho preso la misure del vetro della finestra. Poi ho steso il tendone sul mio tavolo da lavoro e ho deciso dove posizionare la tendina centrando uno dei motivi decorativi del tessuto e sfruttando la parte alta del tendone che aveva degli anelli di stoffa per appendere la tenda. 
First I measured the window glass. Then I spread out the curtain on the table and decided where to place the shade centering it on one of the decorations of the fabric and using the upper part of the curtain that already had some fabric rings to hang the curtain. 

Ho disegnato il rettangolo della tenda aggiungendo circa 5 cm sul fondo: serviranno per creare il binario in cui inserire il peso che mantiene le tende a vetro belle tese. Infine ho ritagliato la stoffa aggiungendo un paio di cm su ciascun lato per i margini di cucitura. 
I drew the shade rectangle adding 5 cm in the bottom: we will need them to create the guide for the weight that will keep the shade well stretched. Then I cut the fabric adding a couple of cm on each side for the seam allowance. 

Purtroppo gli anelli di tessuto originari non erano simmetrici nella nuova tendina, così ho dovuto scucirli e riposizionarli tutti: uno al centro, due agli estremi della tendina e altri due equidistanti dai precedenti. 
Unfortunately the original fabric rings were not symmetrical in the new shade, so I had to unpick them and to place them in the right position: one in the middle, two on the shade outer corners and the other two equidistant from the previous. 

Ho orlato i tre lati grezzi della tendina (il lato superiore è già rifinito). 
I hemmed the three raw edges of the shade (the upper border is already finished off). 

Per finire ho creato il binario sul fondo: ho ripiegato il tessuto sul rovescio di 5 cm e ho cucito vicino al bordo superiore della piega. Si può ora inserire in questo binario una barretta di plastica o metallo che funziona come un peso per la tendina mantenendola sempre tesa ed evitando che svolazzi ogni volta che si passa lì vicino. 
In the end I created the guide in the bottom: I folded 5 cm of fabric on the wrong side of the shade and sew near the upper border of the fold. Now you can put in this guide a plastic or metal bar that operates as a weight for the shade keeping it well stretched and avoiding it to flutter about when you walk near it. 

E finalmente la finestra del bagno ha una tendina!!! Che ne dite? 
And at last the bathroom window has the shade!!! Do you like it? 

(For the English readers: I'm not sure if "fabric shade" is the right word, I wanted to distinguish between the big fluttering curtains and the small curtain that lays flat near the window glass, but I don't know exactly how to call the second one. If you can tell me what is the right word for it I would really appreciate your help!)

Cambio di stagione - Wardrobe season change-over

Anche se quest'anno la primavera sembra non arrivare mai, questo weekend mi sono dedicata al cambio di stagione: fuori i maglioni di lana e dentro magliette e abiti leggeri! Gli indumenti invernali sono finiti in un paio di scatoloni dove riposeranno per (si spera!) un bel po' di mesi. 
Even if this year the spring seems far from coming, this weekend I made the wardrobe season change-over: wool sweaters out and lightwait dresses in! The winter clothes are now stored in a couple of cartons where they will rest for (hopefully!) many months. 

Ogni anno mi ritrovavo ad attaccare biglietti sugli scatoloni per ricordare dove avessi messo questo o quell'altro, ma quest'anno mi è venuto in mente un sistema migliore: cartellini intercambiabili! Si possono togliere, scambiare, correggere, sostituire, il tutto senza doverli staccare ogni volta dagli scatoloni (con il rischio di rovinarli). 
Every year I sticked cards on the cartons to remember what was in them, but this year I thought of a better solution: interchangeable cards! They can be removed, exchanged, rectified and replaced without having to unstick them (with the risk to ruin the cartons). 

Materiale: 
* foglio di plastica trasparente rigida (il mio è stato riciclato da una vecchia scatola)
* cartoncino (se anche questo lo avete riciclato, meglio ancora!) 
* righello 
* scotch 
* forbici 
* pennarelli
Material: 
* transparent rigid plastic sheet (mine is recycled from an old box)
* cardboard (if you recycle this too, so much the better!)
* ruler 
* adhesive tape 
* scissors
* markers

Procedimento: 
decidete le misure della finestrella di plastica in base alle dimensioni del vostro foglio trasparente: nel mio caso ho deciso di fare due rettangoli da 10 x 9 cm per tagliare via la parte rovinata del foglio. Per disegnare i rettangoli ho utilizzato uno spillo per lasciare un segno ben visibile sulla plastica.Ritagliate. 
Procedure: 
decide the plastic window size according to your plastic sheet: in my example I decided to make two rectangles of 10 x 9 cm to cut out the ruined parts of the sheet. To draw the rectangles I used a pin to make a visible mark on the plastic. Cut the rectangles. 

Ritagliate altrettanti rettangoli di cartoncino, leggermente più stretti di quelli di plastica (circa mezzo cm) e 1 cm più alti (nel mio caso: plastica 10 x 9 cm, cartoncino 9.5 x 10 cm) in modo da poterli inserire ed estrarre comodamente. 
Cut as many paper rectangles, slightly narrow of the plastic ones (about half cm) and 1 cm high (in my example: plastic 10 x 9 cm, cardboard 9.5 x 10 cm) to make them easily in and out from behind the plastic. 

Scrivete su ogni cartoncino il contenuto di uno scatolone. 
Write on each card the content of a carton.

Usando lo scotch applicate i rettangoli di plastica sugli scatoloni. Suggerisco di posizionarli su un lato e non in cima, così anche quando gli scatoloni saranno impilati sarà facile vedere il contenuto! Applicate lo scotch sui bordi laterali e inferiore della plastica, lasciando libero il bordo superiore. 
Use the adhesive tape to apply the plastic rectangles on the cartons. I suggest to place them on one side of the cartons and not on the top, so it will be easy to read the content even when the cartons are stacked. Apply the adhesive tape on the lateral sides and on the bottom of the rectangle, but not on the upper side. 

Inserite il cartoncino attraverso la parte superiore della finestrella di plastica. 

Credetemi, è un sistema comodissimo! Ed ecco i miei scatoloni pronti per il lungo riposo estivo, con le liste del contenuto ben visibili! 
Believe me, it's so useful! And here are my cartons ready for the long summer rest, with the lists of content well visible!
