Drool bibs: why to choose jersey ones

Today I'm going to write about bibs for newborns: you know, with a baby in the house bibs are never enough! 

For my little boy I tried several types, some made by me and some received as presents for his birth. The ones I prefer (and that I decided to put also in the shop) are those made in double layer of cotton jersey. 

Jersey absorbs well and quickly, which is fundamental especially in the period when the babies sprout their first teeth! Moreover it's very soft, perfect for contact with the delicate skin of babies.
And don't forget the practical side for us moms: they can be thrown in the washing machine without worries, dry quickly and are perfect even without ironing. Victory on all fronts! 

That's why I decided to include in the shop several sets of two or three coordinated bibs, made in double layer of cotton jersey and decorated with small cotton appliques to make them even more cute. There's one for every taste: with flowers, stars, hearts, fishes and in several colors from the classical blue and pink to the gender neutral version in yellow, green, orange.

How to choose the right garment to welcome a newborn baby

Looking for a present for a new mom and you're considering buying a garment for the newborn? Here are some advices to choose the right one!

• avoid size 0-1 month: it's a size that is used for a very short time, actually some big newborns don't even wear it because it's already too small when they come into the world. And usually a mom has already bought some garments in this size before the baby birth, so the risk is that your present will never be used! Better choosing a bigger size, from 1-3 months up to 9-12 months
  
• consider the season when it will be used: for example if you go for the size 6-9 months and the baby is born in January, choose summer garments! I know it can sound obvious, but you've no idea how many moms I heard complaining for clothes they received that are for the wrong season and will never be used: heavy rompers in size 6-9 months for babies born in winter or light summer dresses in size 3-6 months for babies born in autumn... The fact is that in shops we are usually attracted by the latest collection, that is usually right for the current season, and we don't think when the clothes we are buying will be actually used by the new mom and her baby! This is the reason why in my shop you can always find clothes for every season: from the light garments perfect for summer to the long rompers perfect for the cold months. Moreover for all the t-shirts and onesies in the shop you can choose between the long sleeve and the short sleeve version
  
  
  
  
• pay attention to materials: even if they are used for a short time, clothes for babies are going to be washed a huge lot of times! That's why it's essential that they are made with great quality materials and are machine-washable. For example I suggest to avoid felt decorations: they are beautiful but felt doesn't resist well to washing, it pills and tends to loose it shape. That's why I decided to replace felt in my pacifier clips with cotton jersey, that is machine-washable and resistant
   
• keep an eye to practicality: for the first months it's better to choose garments that open on the front, since newborns don't love to have clothes put over their heads. For the next months also, flaps or buttons on shoulders can make the garments easier to wear. Elastic waist, better if adjustable with eyelets, is a must for pants and shorts
  
  
   
  
  
• ...and if you're still hesitant about the size, choose a different present like a set of bibs, maybe with a coordinated pacifier clip: you won't have the problem of the size and you can be sure that your present will be really appreciated and used a lot, with a newborn in the house bibs are never enough! Come scegliere il capo giusto per un regalo di nascita

Siete alla ricerca del regalo per una neo mamma e state pensando ad un capo d'abbigliamento per il bebè? Ecco qualche consiglio per scegliere il regalo giusto!

• evitate la taglia 0-1 mese: è una taglia che viene indossata per pochissimo tempo, anzi i bimbi che nascono più grandicelli a volte neanche la indossano perchè gli va piccola già dalla nascita. E in genere una mamma ha già acquistato qualche capo in questa taglia prima della nascita, per cui rischiate di regalarle qualcosa che non userà mai! Meglio optare per una taglia più grande, a partire dalla taglia 1-3 mesi fino alla 9-12 mesi
  
• considerate la stagione in cui verrà indossato: se ad esempio optate per un regalo taglia 6-9 mesi e il bimbo è nato a gennaio, puntate su capi estivi! So che può sembrare scontato, ma non avete idea di quante mamme abbia sentito lamentarsi per aver ricevuto in regalo capi della stagione sbagliata, che il bimbo non indosserà mai: tutine pesanti taglia 6-9 mesi per bimbi nati in pieno inverno o leggeri abitini estivi in taglia 3-6 mesi per bimbe nate in autunno... Purtroppo spesso nei negozi si è attratti dai capi della collezione più recente, che in genere sono adatti alla stagione in corso, senza pensare a quando questi verranno effettivamente utilizzati dalla neo mamma e dal suo bimbo! Per questo motivo nel mio shop trovate sempre capi per ogni stagione: dai capi più freschi perfetti per l'estate alle tutine lunghe perfette per i mesi più freddi. Inoltre per tutti i body e le magliette presenti nello shop è possibile scegliere sia la versione a maniche lunghe sia quella a maniche corte
  
  
  
• attenzione ai materiali: anche se vengono indossati per pochi mesi, i capi per bambini verranno lavati tante tante tante volte! Per questo motivo è fondamentale che i materiali siano di qualità e lavabili in lavatrice. Evitate ad esempio le applicazioni in feltro: sono bellissime ma purtroppo questo materiale non resiste bene ai lavaggi e tende a fare molti pallini e a perdere la forma. Per questo motivo ho scelto di sostituire il feltro nei miei portaciuccio con il jersey di cotone che resiste benissimo ai lavaggi sia a mano che in lavatrice
  
   
  
  
• pensate alla praticità: soprattutto per i primi mesi meglio optare per capi con apertura frontale, in genere i neonati non amano che gli venga infilati gli abiti dalla testa. Anche per i mesi successivi la presenza di alette o bottoni sulle spalle renderà i capi più semplici da indossare. L'elastico in vita, meglio se regolabile tramite un elastico ad occhielli, è fondamentale per pantaloni e shorts
   
• ...e se siete ancora indecisi sulla taglia, optate per un regalo diverso come ad esempio un set di bavaglini, magari con portaciuccio coordinato: non avrete il problema delle misure e avrete la certezza che il vostro regalo sarà molto apprezzato e utilizzato a lungo, con un neonato in casa i bavaglini non sono mai abbastanza! Fiori arancioni per una bimba - Orange flowers for a girl

Dopo la maglietta con le orme arancioni della scorsa settimana, oggi vi presento un outfit in tinta realizzato per una bimba appena nata. Amo questo colore: è allegro, solare, ricorda la primavera e l'estate, mi mette di buon umore!
After the t-shirt with orange paw prints, today I'm showing you an outfit in the same color realized for a newborn baby. I love this color: it's cheerful, sunny, reminds me of spring and summer, it makes me happy!

Questo completino è partito alcune settimane fa per gli USA, è stato il mio regalo per dare il benvenuto ad una dolce bimba appena nata. L'outfit è in taglia 3-6 mesi, così potrà indossarlo questa estate. E se per caso il body diventasse troppo corto la mamma, che ama cucire, potrà sempre trasformarlo in maglietta seguendo questo tutorial!
This clothing set shipped a few weeks ago for the USA, it was my gift to welcome a sweet newborn girl.  The outfit is in size 3-6 months, so the baby will wear it in the sumemr. And if the onesie will become too short the mother, who loves sewing, can transform it into a t-shirt following this tutorial!

La gonna è in cotone, a due strati: arancione per lo strato inferiore e cotone stampato con fiori arancione e magenta per lo strato superiore. In vita un morbido elastico la rende comoda e pratica.
The skirt is in double cotton layer: orange for the bottom layer, printed with orange and magenta flowers for the upper layer. The soft elastic waist band makes the skirt comfortable and easy to wear.

Per il body ho utilizzato un body preconfezionato in cotone bianco, a cui ho applicato tre fiori realizzati con il tessuto stampato della gonna, bordati in tre colori differenti che richiamano la gonna. L'apertura sulle spalle lo rende semplice da far indossare ad un neonato.
For the onesie I used a store-bought white cotton onesie on which I applied three flowers in the printed fabric of the skirt, with borders in three different colors that recall the skirt hues. The opening on the shoulders makes it easy to put the onesie on to a newborn.

Per completare l'outfit non poteva mancare uno dei miei portaciuccio: nastro realizzato con il tessuto a fiori, fiore di feltro imbottito, piccolo bottone di madreperla arancione. Come sempre, un nastro di raso chiuso ad anello rende facile attaccare questa clip a qualsiasi ciuccio, da quelli con anellino di plastica integrato ai MAM: basta far passare il nastrino all'interno di uno dei fori del ciuccio e il gioco è fatto!
Per attaccare il portaciuccio agli abiti ho utilizzato una clip di metallo argentata, resistente e munita di dentini di plastica per non danneggiare i capi di abbigliamento.
To complete the outfit I added one of my pacifier clips: ribbon in printed fabric, stuffed felt flower, small orange mother-of-pearl button. As usual, a ring of satin ribbon makes it easy to attach the pacifier clip to every kind of pacifier, from those with a built-in plastic ring to the MAM pacifiers, you only need to slip the ribbon into one of the pacifier holes: so easy!
To fasten the pacifier holders to the garments I used a silver metal clip, robust and supplied with plastic inserts to prevent any damage to clothing.

Orme per un bimbo - Paw prints for a boy

Spesso mi viene fatto notare che la maggior parte delle mie creazioni sono per bambine, mentre per i maschietti c'è poca scelta. Ebbene, da oggi c'è un capo in più per loro: una maglietta in bianco e arancione, con tante impronte feline dipinte a mano
Many people remarked that  most of my creations are for girls, while there are only few items for boys. Well, starting from today there's a new item for them: a white and orange t-shirt with lots of hand painted feline paw prints

La maglietta nella foto è stata realizzata per un bimbo con una passione per i leoni: siccome non sono molto brava a disegnarli ho pensato che le loro orme andassero comunque bene! Pare che il bimbo abbia apprezzato!
I made the t-shirt of the pictures for a boy who loves lions: since I'm not good at drawing them I thought their paw prints would be fine! It seems the boy appreciated it!

Tutorial: da body a maglietta - Tutorial: from onesie to t-shirt

Alcuni mesi fa una mamma mi ha chiesto di trasformare un paio di body del suo bimbo in magliette: erano diventati corti ma come larghezza andavano ancora bene, sarebbe stato un peccato non poterli più utilizzare. In più mi ha chiesto se fosse possibile aggiungere un paio di maniche lunghe, da poter attaccare e staccare all'occorrenza. Visto che la richiesta era molto interessante e la mamma è rimasta soddisfatta del risultato, ho pensato di realizzare un tutorial da condividere con voi! 
Few months ago a mom requested me to transform a couple of onesies of her baby into t-shirts: they were grown too short but the width was still fine, it would have been a pity not to use them anymore. Moreover she asked me if it was possible to add a pair of long sleeves, to attach or remove when needed. Since the request was interesting and the mom was satisfied with the result, I decided to make a tutorial and share it with you!

Per prima cosa tagliate la parte inferiore dei body. Se ci sono dei bottoni sul davanti, come nel mio caso, calcolate il punto in cui tagliare in base alla loro posizione: avremo bisogno di almeno 2 cm di tessuto libero sotto all'ultimo bottone per poter fare l'orlo
First cut off the botton part of  the onesie. If there are buttons on the front, like in mine, calculate the position of the cut according to their position: we need at least 2 cm of free fabric under the last button to hem the t-shirt

Scucite il bordo inferiore dell'orlo del body: lo useremo per bordare le maniche lunghe in modo da richiamare i colori del body
Unstitch the bottom border of the onesie: we'll use it to hem the  bottom of the sleaves to recall the colors of the onesie

Realizzate l'orlo della maglietta: io ho rifinito il bordo del tessuto con la taglia e cuci, poi ho ripiegato verso l'interno il tessuto per circa 1.5 cm e ho cucito con punto zig zag, in modo che la cucitura rimanga elastica. Se non avete la taglia e cuci potete usare solo lo zig-zag: la maglina non si sfilaccia. In alternatica allo zig-zag potete cucire con un ago gemello
Hem the t-shirt: I finished the border of the fabric with the serger, then folded 1.5 cm of fabric to the inside of the t-shirt and sewn with zig zag, so the seam is elastic. If you don't have a serger you can use just the zig zag: jersey doesn't fray. You can also use the twin needle instead of the zig zag

Per le maniche lunghe, misurate la circonferenza del fondo manica del body (chiamiamo questa misura C1), la lunghezza del braccio del bimbo dalla spalla al polso (chiamiamola L1), la lunghezza della manica corta del body, dal punto in cui si attacca alla spalla fino all'orlo della manica (chiamiamola L2) e la circonferenza del polso del bimbo (chiamiamola C2). Disegnate il cartamodello della manica come in figura:
For the long sleeves, measure the circumference of the end of the onesie sleeve (let's call this measure C1), the length of the baby arm, from shoulder to wrist (let's call it L1), the length of the onesie sleeve, from the shoulder seam to the hem (let's call it L2) and the wrist circumference of the baby (let's call it C2). Draw the sleeve pattern as shown in this picture:

Prendete della maglina (o jersey) bianca, appoggiatela lasciando il lato diritto verso il basso e ritagliate due sagome della manica, aggiungendo i margini di cucitura (io solitamente uso 0.7 cm sui lati e 1.5 cm in alto. Non serve margine di cucitura in basso perchè lo rifiniremo con il bordo scucito dal body). Controllate di aver posizionato il cartamodello con il dritto filo corretto: la riga centrale tratteggiata deve essere parallela alla cimosa del tessuto
Take some white jersey, put it with right side down and cut two times the sleeve shape, adding seam allowance (I use 0.7 cm on t he sides and 1.5 cm on the top border. No need to add any to the bottom border as we will finish it with the onesie border we unstitched earlier). Make sure the pattern is placed on the grain: the central dotted line must be parallel to the fabric selvage

Piegate ciascuna manica a metà facendo combaciare i lati lunghi, con il diritto del tessuto all'interno, cucite il lato lungo a 0.7 cm dal bordo con la taglia e cuci o con lo zig-zag
Fold each sleeve in half making the long sides match, right side inside, sew the long sides at 0.7 cm from the border with serger or zig zag

Ripiegate verso il rovescio del tessuto il bordo superiore per 1.5 cm e cucite con zig-zag.
Fold 1.5 cm of the top border to the wrong side of the fabric and sew with zig zag.

Applicate lungo il lato inferiore il bordino scucito dal fondo del body, anche qui utilizzando uno zig-zag: è importante che la cucitura sia elastica. Risvoltate ed ecco pronta la manica lunga!
Apply along the botton side the border unstitched from the onesie, still using zig zag: it's important that this seam is elastic. Turn inside out and the long sleeve is ready! 

Applicate quattro bottoni a pressione trasparenti, misura 0.5 cm, posizionando una metà di ciascun bottone sul bordo superiore della manica lunga e l'altra metà nella parte interna della manica corta del body, facendo attenzione a far combaciare la cucitura della manica lunga con la cucitura inferiore della manica del body
Apply four transparent snaps, size 0.5 cm, placing one half of each on the top border of the sleeve and the other half inside the onesie original sleeve, making the long sleeve side seam match the bottom seam of the onesie sleeve

Ecco fatto: due magliette come nuove, perfette sia per l'estate che per l'inverno!
Here we are: two t-shirts as good as new, perfect both for sumemr and winter!
