Il progetto segreto: un abito da sposa - The secret project: a wedding dress

Ecco finalmente le foto del progetto segreto a cui ho lavorato questa estate: un nuovo abito da sposa!!! 
Here are at last the pictures of the secret project I worked on this summer: a new wedding dress!!!

A febbraio mia sorella mi ha annunciato che si sarebbe sposata ad agosto e mi ha chiesto di realizzare il suo abito: riuscite ad immaginare quanto sia stato gratificante sapere che lei ha così tanta fiducia nelle mie capacità di sarta?! In fondo, nella mia vita avevo realizzato solo un abito da sposa, il mio: non si può certo dire che fossi un'esperta in questo tipo di abiti! 
In February my sister told me she was going to get married in August and asked me to realize her wedding dress: can you imagine how gratifying it was to know that she has so much faith in my seamstress skills?! In my life I only realized one wedding dress, my own: it's not like I'm a great expert in that kind of dresses!

I tempi erano molto stringenti, considerate che ho un lavoro a tempo pieno e faccio la pendolare quindi riesco a dedicarmi al cucito solo nei weekend o qualche volta di sera, quando non sono troppo stanca. In più abitiamo a circa 150 km di distanza quindi abbiamo potuto fare pochissime prove. Per fortuna la futura sposa aveva le idee molto chiare sul modello, questo ha facilitato molto il mio lavoro! 
The timing was pressing, consider that I have a full time job and I'm a com muter, so I can sew only during the weekends and sometimes in the evening, when not too tired. Moreover we live at about 150 km from each other so we made very few tries. Luckily the bride-to-be had very clear ideas about the dress, this made my job easier!

Eccolo qui: raso di seta bianco panna per il corpino incrociato e per l'ampia mezza gonna con leggero strascico, delicatissimo pizzo bianco panna per le spalline e lo stesso pizzo, doppiato con raso in tinta, per la gonna a tubino.
Here it is: off-white silk satin for the criss-crossed bodice and and for the wide half-gown with small train, delicate lace for the shoulder straps and the same lace, lined with off-white satin, for the pencil skirt.  

Il fatto che fossi io a realizzare il suo abito era un segreto, anche per i genitori degli sposi stessi, per questo non ho potuto parlarne sul blog durante la lavorazione: è stata una grande sorpresa per gli invitati quando mia sorella ha svelato chi era la sua sarta di fiducia! 
We kept secret the fact the I was making the dress, we didn't even tell to the bride's and groom's parents, that's why I didn't mention it on the blog while working at it: it was a great surprise for the guests when my sister announced who was her trusted seamstress!

Certo, realizzare un abito da sposa è molto impegnativo ma la soddisfazione di vedere la sposa soddisfatta e raggiante è meraviglioso!
Well, making a wedding dress is hard but the the satisfaction to see the bride happy and radiant is wonderful! 

Matrimonio 2: il coprispalle - Wedding 2: the shawl

Per la cerimonia in Chiesa ho realizzato un semplicissimo coprispalle con maniche corte: come tessuto ho utilizzato sei strati di tulle bianco, per renderlo un po' coprente. 
For the rite at the Church I realized a simple shawl with short sleeves: as fabric I used six layers of white tulle, to make it less transparent. 

Sul davanti ho applicato una chiusura in metallo argentato con due strass, per richiamare il motivo decorativo dell'abito. 
On the front I applied a silver fastening with two strasses, to match the dress decoration. 

In trasparenza si vedeva comunque il decoro dell'abito e la farfalla frontale. 
In transparency it was still visible the decoration and the front butterfly.

Ebbene sì, il 28 settembre ci siamo sposati!!!!! 
Yes, on 28th September we got married!!!!!

E' stata una giornata stupenda, qualche nuvola ma caldo e niente pioggia, la cerimonia in chiesa è stata semplice, allegra e partecipata e poi il ricevimento in agriturismo, antipasti serviti in giardino, un ottimo pranzo all'interno di una cascina e poi ancora in giardino per il taglio della torta. Pochi invitati in modo da poter godere davvero della loro compagnia. 
It has been a wonderful day, cloudy but hot and without rain, the celebration in the church was simple, happy and felt and then we had the party in an agritourism, starters served in the garden, a very good lunch inside a farmhouse and then again in the garden for the cut of the wedding cake. Few guests so we could really enjoy their company. 

Ed eccolo qui, finalmente, dopo più di un anno di lavoro, metri e metri di stoffa e fodera, chilometri di filo da imbastire e da cucito, una quantità imprecisata di nastro per stecche, rete di nylon per sottogonne, tulle rigido e fliselina, centinaia di strass: IL MIO ABITO DA SPOSA! 
And here it is, finally, after more than one year of work, metres and metres of fabric and lining, kilometres of basting and sewing thread, an undefined quantity of boning tape, nylon petticoat netting, rigid tulle and stiffener, hundreds of strasses: MY WEDDING DRESS!

Come facilmente immaginabile dopo questo post, il modello è a sirena, senza spalline, con leggero strascico. Il tessuto è un cady di poliestere color bianco ottico, morbidissimo al tatto e molto lucido. 
As you could easily imagine after this post, it is a mermaid dress, strapless, with a bit of train. The fabric is an polyester cady in optical white, incredibly soft to the touch and really shiny. 

L'abito è impreziosito da un decoro su un lato: una serie di volute in strass argentati, più alcuni strass a goccia con finitura aurora boreale utilizzati sia come foglie sia riuniti a gruppi di cinque a formare dei fiori. 
The dress is embellished with a decoration on one side: a series of coils in silver strasses, with some drop-shaped strasses with borealis finishing used single as leaves or in groups of five to create some flowers.

A completare il decoro, due farfalle di metallo e strass che, nella loro vita precedente, erano due mollette per capelli! 
To complete the decoration, two metal butterflies that were, in their previous life, hair clips!

I only tell you this: a little while ago I tried it on after basting the last seams and... I didn't want to take it off!!! 

Due mesi - Two months

Sì, ci sono, sono tornata già da un po' dalle ferie (perchè il tempo passa così velocemente durante le ferie???) ma non ho avuto tempo/forze per aggiornare il blog... 
Yes, I'm here, I came back from the holidays some days ago (why time passes so fast during holidays???) but I didn't have time/energy to update the blog... 

Questo weekend ho sfidato il caldo in mansarda per lavorare all'abito da sposa (meno di 2 mesi al matrimonio... MENO DI 2 MESI!!!) e ho fatto grandi passi avanti, ma ovviamente niente foto per il momento! 
This weekend I defied the hot weather in the attic to work at the wedding dress (less than 2 months to the wedding... LESS THAN 2 MONTHS!!!) and I did great steps forward, but obviously no pictures for the moment! 

Ora che ci penso, dovrei fare molte più foto della lavorazione: voglio ricordarmi questo periodo emozionante negli anni a venire ma di solito sono così presa dal cucito (oppure offuscata dal caldo) che mi dimentico di scattare delle foto. 
Now that I think of it, I should take more pictures of the work in progress: I want to remember this thrilling period in the next years but usually I'm so absorbed by sewing (or blurred by the hot) that I forget to take pictures. 

Di abito, balcone e limoni - About dress, balcony and lemons

E' quasi un mese che non scrivo sul blog! La cosa mi dispiace, ma ultimamente sono stanca e preferisco dedicare le mie poche energie e il poco tempo libero al mio abito da sposa e al balcone. 
It's quite one month since I wrote on this blog last time! I'm sorry for this, but in this period I'm quite tired and I prefer to dedicate my few energies and the few free time to my wedding dress and to our balcony. 

Il balcone finalmente contiene alcune piante provenienti dalle nostre vecchie case e un angolo "orto" in cui speriamo di riuscire a far crescere, oltre ai fagioli di questo post, anche un po' di fragole, lattughina, carote e basilico. 
The balcony at last contains some plants from our previous houses and a "vegetable" corner where we hope will grow not only the beans from this post, but also some strawberries, lettuce, carrots and basil. 

Lo vedete quel bellissimo alberello al centro? E' il nostro nuovo albero di limone, regalo del moroso per il mio compleanno (settimana scorsa): ha un sacco di fiori profumatissimi e tanti piccoli limoni! Stupendo! 
Can you see the beautiful little tree in the middle? It's our new lemon tree, that my boyfriend gifted me for my birthday (last week): it has a lot of scented flowers and many little lemons! Wonderful! 

Anche l'abito da sposa procede, un po' a rilento. Mancano solo poco più di quattro mesi al matrimonio! Aiuto!!! 
The dress is going on, slowly. Little more than four months left for the wedding! Help!!!

Prima o poi tornerò con qualche post più "succulento", promesso!

Piccoli fagiolini crescono - Little beans grow

Durante un weekend di pioggia e freddo, in cui per colmo di sfiga ho anche scoperto che sono dimagrita e quindi la parte alta dell'abito mi va larga e devo stringere il cartamodello (e speriamo di non cambiare ancora peso prima del matrimonio... ma sarà dura...) c'è per lo meno un barlume di primavera: i fagioli che ho seminati poco tempo fa stanno germogliando! 
During a rainy and cold weekend, in which I also discovered that I slimmed down and therefore the upper part of the dress is too loose and I have to tighten the pattern (and hopefully I'll not change again my weight before the wedding... but it'll be hard...) there's at least one glimmer of spring: the beans I sow short time ago are sprouting! 

Alcuni sono sementi che ho comperato, altri sono fagioli che avevo comperato secchi da mangiare mesi fa e che ho tenuto da parte. 
Some are seeds I bought, the others are dried beans I bought to cook and that I put aside months ago. 

Li ho messi in ammollo in acqua per qualche ora, poi li ho messi a germogliare in un contenitore con del cotone inumidito e quando ho visto spuntare le radici li ho trasferiti nella terra in questi piccoli vasetti fatti con carta di giornale (prossimamente il tutorial) così che possano essere tranquillamente interrati nei vasi sul terrazzo quando il clima tornerà un po' più clemente. 
I soaked them for some hours, then put them in a container with some damped cotton and when the roots started to show I moved them to small vases made with newspaper filled with ground (tutorial will follow) so that they can be buried in the vases on the terrace once the weather will become milder. 

Nel frattempo me li tengo in casa e li guardo crescere: ma avete idea di quanto velocemente crescono??? Basta tornare a guardarli dopo una mezzora e si vede già il cambiamento!!! Un miracolo... 
Meanwile I keep them inside the house and watch them grow: do you have any idea how fast they grow??? If you watch them after just half an hour you can already see they're changed!!! A miracle...

Essere o non essere (una blogger) - To be or not to be (a blogger)

Ecco, in questo momento mi trovo davanti ad un bivio: da una parte la mia anima da blogger (e anche un filino esibizionista, eheheh!) mi spinge a condividere con voi le foto dei progressi del mio abito da sposa, dall'altra parte mi piace anche l'idea che il mio abito rimanga una sorpresa fino al giorno del matrimonio! 
Well, in this moment I'm facing a turnoff: on one side my blogger nature (and my being a bit exhibitionist, eheheh!) leads me to share with you all the pictures of the wedding dress progresses, on the other side I also like the idea to keep the dress secret until the wedding! 

Il moroso/futuromarito ha scelto di non vederlo (nonostante l'abito sia lì in casa) perchè preferisce la sorpresa. Ormai però capita spesso che quando siamo insieme e incontriamo qualcuno che legge il blog mi viene chiesto di parlare dell'abito, si scambiano domande e commenti su modello e decorazioni, insomma, si toglie un po' di sorpresa al moroso! E poi mi sembra assurdo che amici e sconosciuti conoscano ogni dettaglio dell'abito prima che lui lo abbia visto... 
The boyfriend/futurehusband decided not to see the dress (even if it is in the house) because he prefers it to be a surprise. But now it often happens that when we are together we meet someone who reads the blog and who asks questions about the dress or comments about the shape and decorations, and this takes off some of the surprise to him! And then it's awkward that friends and strangers know every detail of the dress before the boyfriend even saw it... 

Quindi credo che d'ora in avanti mi limiterò a tenervi aggiornati sui progressi e posterò qualche foto senza farlo mai vedere per intero. Per le foto complete dovrete aspettare settembre! 
So from now on I think I will only keep you updated on the progresses and will post only pictures without showing the full dress. For the complete pictures you have to wait until September! 

Comunque, per la cronaca: l'abito al momento è ancora in versione "test", ma finalmente ho ripreso a lavorarci su!!! 
Anyway, for the record: the dress is still in its "test" version but I finally resumed working on it!!! 

Materiali - Stuff

Povero blog, lo sto proprio trascurando ultimamente... Siamo agli sgoccioli per il trasloco e ci sono un sacco di cose da decidere e da sistemare, spero che entro qualche settimana saremo più tranquilli e avrò tempo di dedicarmi un po' al mio abito da sposa e al blog!
Puor blog, I'm neglecting it a lot lately... We are near the home moving and there are a lot of things to decide and to arrange, I hope in few weeks we will be more quite and I'll have time to work at my wedding dress and to update the blog! 

Nel frattempo ho adocchiato un po' di materiali che potrei utilizzare per decorare l'abito da sposa. Mi sa che a breve farò un ordine!
Meanwhile I put an eye on some stuff that I could use for the wedding dress decoration. I think I will soon place an order!

Ispirazioni per l'abito - Inspirations for the dress

Finalmente dopo mesi sono riuscita a dedicare qualche ora al mio abito da sposa!!! Poverino, è stato molto trascurato ultimamente... 
At last after some months I managed to dedicate few hours to my wedding dress!!! Pour dress, it has been neglected a lot lately... 

Partiamo dal presupposto che non ho ancora ben chiaro come lo voglio... è un buon inizio, no?!
Diciamo che ho un'idea di massima, piuttosto vaga... Inizierò con il realizzare la versione più semplice che ho in mente e poi vedrò se mi soddisfa o se modificarla o aggiungere qualcosa. 
The premise is that I still don't have well clear in mind how I want it... it's a good starting point, isn't it?!  
Let's say I have a general idea, rather vague... I'll start by realizing the simplest version I have in mind and then I'll see if it satisfies me or if I should modify or add anything.

Eccolo - This is it

Venerdì scorso sono riuscita a dedicare un po' di tempo al mio abito da sposa. Dopo aver modificato il cartamodello per la milionesima volta ho imbastito la prova e sembrava che finalmente andasse bene, così mi sono decisa a cucirlo a macchina.

Last Friday I managed to dedicate some time to my wedding dress. After modifying the pattern for the millionth time I basted the test dress and it seemed good, so I decided to machine sew it.

Ed ecco la sorpresa... l'ho indossato e mi sembrava troppo stretto, mi faceva le tette praticamente piatte!!! (non che ce ne siano molte, in realtà, ma andare a schiacciare quel poco che c'è mi sembra un peccato...) Per di più provavo ad inserire all'interno le coppe imbottite e non riuscivo proprio a posizionarla bene, continuava a vedersi uno "scalino" dove finiva.

And here is the surprise... I tried it on and it seemed too tight, it made my boobs look quite flat!!! (not that I have much actually, but to flatten even the bit I have is a pity...). Moreover I tried to put the padded cups inside and I was not able to find the right way, there was always a "step" near the cup borders.

Ammetto di aver avuto i miei 5 minuti di sconforto totale, ho pensato che non ce l'avrei mai fatta... 

To be honest I really had 5 minutes of total discouragement, I thought I would never be able to make the dress...

Poi ho trovato un altro modo di posizionare l'imbottitura tra la fodera e la stoffa esterna e..... PERFETTO! Ebbene sì, pare che ci siamo!!!!!

Then I tried another way to put the padding between the lining and the main fabric and.....  PERFECT! Yes, we are getting there!!!!!

Scusate la foto orrenda ma era tardi, ero stanca morta e indossare un vestito foderato con 30°C e un'umidità pazzesca non è esattamente piacevole, per cui l'ho fatta in fretta per potermi cambiare! 

Sorry for the horrible picture but it was late, I was mortally tired and wearing a dress with lining at 30°C and a lot of dampness is not exactly pleasant, so I took the picture in a hurry to undress myself as soon as possible!

OK, la parte superiore è a posto (basta che io non perda di nuovo il cartamodello...), prossimamente inizierò a disegnare la parte inferiore!

OK, the upper part of the dress is fixed (hoping not to loose the pattern again...), next time I'll start to draw the bottom part! 

Scatoloni - Cartons

Mi aspetta un bel weekend di riempimento scatoloni in vista del trasloco! Domani pomeriggio verranno anche i miei genitori per aiutarmi a spostare un po' di roba (e per vedere un'ultima - o penultima - volta la mia casetta). Porteranno a casa loro un po' di cose che non prevedo di utilizzare nei prossimi mesi, mentre i vestiti e le cose che uso più spesso le porterò direttamente a Novara: ho già invaso parte del garage della futurasuocera!

I'm going to have a weekend of cartons filling for the house moving! Tomorrow afternoon my parents will come to help me moving some of my stuff (and to see for the last - or last but one - time my sweet house). They'll take at their home some things I'm not going to use in the next months, while I'll take my dresses and the things I use more often directly to Novara: I'm already invading my futuremotherinlaw garage!

Considerando che tra una settimana partirò per il mare, mi restano solo due weekend per completare il trasloco... PANICO!!! 

Considering that I'll leave for the sea in one week there are only two weekends left to complete the moving...  PANIC!!!

Devo ricordarmi anche di fare qualche foto alla mia casetta fintanto che ci sono ancora i quadri appesi (anche se le foto di Parigi che erano appese nell'ingresso le ho già tolte e imballate). Altrimenti mi ritroverò senza neanche un ricordo della mia prima casetta!

I have to remember to take some pictures of my sweet home while there are still paintings on the walls (even if I already packed some pictures of Paris that were in the entrance). Otherwise I'll found myself without a keepsake of my first house!

Tra l'altro mi piacerebbe anche riuscire a godermi un po' la mia Milano, vediamo se riuscirò ad incastrare tutto.

Among other things I'd like to enjoy also my Milan, let's see if I'll manage to do everything.

Nel frattempo ho anche ripreso in mano l'abito da sposa: dopo aver dovuto scucire tutto a causa delle misure sballate della parte superiore ho finalmente imbastito la nuova versione. Ho provato ad indossarla (con ovvi problemi tecnici, dovendomi appuntare addosso gli spilli da sola) e sembra che ci siamo, stasera dovrei trovare il tempo per cucirlo così finalmente potrò fare vedere i progressi a mia mamma: ogni volta che ci vediamo il vestito è sempre scucito per un motivo o per l'altro... 

Meanwhile I also started again to work at my wedding dress: after the last unstitching for size problems on the upper part I finally basted the new version. I tried it on (with obvious problems, since I have to pin it on me all by myself) and it seems we are there, this evening I should sew it so tomorrow I can show the progress to my mum: every time we meet the dress is unstitched for some reason...

Forse dovrei concentrarmi su una cosa per volta, tipo il trasloco che è imminente, ma è più forte di me!
Maybe I should focus on one thing at a time, for example the moving that is imminent, but I just can't help it!

Ce la farò, non temete - I can do it, don't worry

Non l'ho più postato ma il mio abito da sposa procede, seppure lentamente. 

I didn't publish anything about it but my wedding dress is going on, even if slowly.

Ho interrotto per alcuni giorni per realizzare una borsa da spiaggia simile alla mia su richiesta di mia sorella come regalo di compleanno. Purtroppo l'ho finita a notte fonda subito prima della consegna, così non ho proprio fatto in tempo a fare foto... rimedierò tra un paio di weekend, le ho già chiesto di portarla quando ci vedremo così farò un bel po' di foto!

I stopped it for some days to sew a beach bag similar to mine, requested by my sister as birthday present. Unfortunately I completed it late at night just before the delivery, so I didn't take pictures... I will make up for this in a couple of weeks, I already asked her to bring the bag with her when we will meet so I can take a lot of pictures!

Riguardo al mio abito, ho cucito una seconda prova proseguendo il vestito fino a metà coscia. Una volta indossato ho realizzato che ora nella parte alta mi va troppo grande! Si vede che ricalcare il modello dal vecchio corpino di stoffa non è un metodo molto preciso... Così eccomi di nuovo qui a modificare il cartamodello del corpino! 

About my wedding dress, I sewn a second version up to half thigh. Once put on I realized that the upper part is now too big! It seems tracing out the pattern from the old fabric bodice is not a precise method... So here I am again modifying the pattern!

Ma ce la farò, non temete...

Progressi e panico - Progress and panic

Ho avuto un attimo di panico quando ho realizzato che ho perso (probabilmente buttato via) il cartamodello del corpino dell'abito da sposa!!!!! 

I had a moment of pure panic when I realized that I lost (probably thrown away) the pattern of the bodice for my wedding dress!!!!!

Per fortuna che ho il corpino di prova, l'ho scucito e ho ricavato da lì il cartamodello originario. Però che spavento..... 

Luckily I have the test bodice, I unstitched it and obtained from there the original pattern. But how scary.....

Un pezzettino per volta procedo, ora ho iniziato a disegnare il primo pezzo della parte inferiore dell'abito. Prevedo numerosi cambiamenti e modifiche, ma da qualche parte bisogna pur cominciare!

Step by step I proceed, now I started to draw the first section of the bottom part. I foresee many changes and modifications, but I should start somewhere!

Corpino 2 - Bodice 2

Seconda versione del corpino con le stecche, direi che stiamo andando nella giusta direzione!

Second version of the bodice with boning, I think we are moving in the right direction! 

La forma del seno va decisamente meglio, così come le cuciture sul davanti che ora non hanno più grinze. 

The breast shape is now better, and so are the seams on the front that are now without wrinkles.

La prossima modifica sarà abbassare di qualche centimetro la parte dietro perchè così mi dà un po' fastidio sulle scapole quando mi muovo, e stringere ancora un pochino la parte davanti in alto, così che stia bella ferma. 

Next modification will be to lower the back part for few centimeters because now it's not so comfortable for my shoulder blades when I'm moving, and to shrink a bit more the upper front part, to make it more steady.

Ora che sono arrivata a questo punto voglio dirvi perchè sto cercando di fare un corpino del genere: io e il moroso abbiamo deciso di sposarci e mi piacerebbe realizzare da sola il mio vestito da sposa!!!!! 

Now that I'm at this point I'll tell you why I'm making this bodice: I and my boyfriend are getting married and I'd like to sew my wedding dress by myself!!!!!

Ovviamente so che è una impresa titanica, quindi per ora voglio solo provare a realizzarne qualche parte singolarmente per vedere se sono in grado. Se vedrò che è troppo complicato potrò sempre ripiegare su un negozio di abiti da sposa, ma almeno ci avrò provato! Nel peggiore dei casi avrò comunque imparato qualche tecnica nuova!

I obviously know this will be a titanic undertaking, so for now I'm just trying to realize some part of the dress separately to see if I'm able to make them. If I'll see it is too complicated I will fall back on a wedding dress shop, but at least I'll know I made an attempt! In the worst I'll anyway learn some new technique! 

In futuro però eviterò di mettere foto sul blog, tranne forse qualche dettaglio, per non togliere la sorpresa a chi mi vedrà poi dal vivo in abito da sposa!
